hello, im pretty new to all this so bear with me, im from galloway and obviously have an affinity with the area and its history.
can you help with this query which i believe opens up a whole can of worms this side of the border.
some research i have done correctly or incorrectly has led me to believe that both King Tudwall of Galloway and Vortigern married Emperor Magnum Maximus
Guletic's daughters, Gratiana and Severa respectively, both mariages providing a male and female...

Whilst the use of the phrase "Dark Ages" in English seems to date from the Eighteenth Century as a pejorative reference to the centuries following the fall of the Western Empire, its use by academics in the sense of an obscure subject of study is presumably more recent.

I wonder if anyone can pinpoint the first use of the phrase in this latter sense. I have some dim recollection of St Paul being paraphrased and the period being described as one that can only be glimpsed...

Before Vortigern seized power britain was supposedly governed by a council consisting of 300 members. I think this is mentioned by Nennius. Do we have any idea where the members of this council came from? I would guess that they were mostly the members of the Diocesian Council which was made up of magistrates representing the Civitates of Britannia,
perhaps with some major landowners and military leaders.
does anyone else have any ideas?

After doing a little research on Cerdic, a theory popped up that I'd like some feedback on...

1. Both Vortigern and Cerdic are associated with a people named the "Gewissae," which possibly refers to the people of Gwent or Gwenydd.

2. Vortigern married Rowena, the daughter of Hengist, a Jutish warlord.

3.
