Hi everyone, I believe that this is the first time I'm posting in this forum. So I guess I'll ask a question.
Here goes: As I was watching the 13th Warrior on DVD this popped into my mind. Does the story of Beowulf have any connections with arthurian lore? Any response will be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Nighthunter.
The answer is no. And, in a small way, yes.  Confused? I'll explain. No, because the hero Beowulf and all his surrounding have no connection whatsoever with Arthurian legend. And yet, a small yes. There's one story, re-told in the Beowulf saga as a heroic tale by the light of the fire, which somehow in connected. This is the tale of the Freswael, aka the Fight at Finnesburgh, in which a young hero, whose lord is betrayed and killed, chooses to serve the killer. And with the next spring, avenges his dead lord. This hero is Hengest, and he is almost certainly the same Hengest who later, exiled from his homeland (because of his actions at Finnesburgh?), offers his services to Vortigern. Hengest plays his own, modest, role in the start of the Arthurian legend. Cheers, Robert |

Thanks, I think I understand now. Hmmm....so....Hengest would be the only tiny shred connecting Arthur and Beowulf. Interesting stuff.
It seems that alot was going on during the era of the fifth through the seventh centuries ( if I'm correct ) in those parts ( Britain and Scandinavia ). You know also The Lord of the Rings trilogy remind me so much of what I would perceive as belonging to that period in history, eventhough it's purely ficticious. I'm assuming Tolkien might have borrowed extensively from early British history i.e. the era of Arthur and Vortigern. Again many thanks.
