Hullo folks
I'm a big fan of Merlin. I'd like to know if Mike Ashley's collection, The Merlin chronicles, are good? What else would you recommend on Merlin? "He spoke with the sad relish of the Messenger to Job"

If you can lay your hands on anything by Ashley, I'd buy it! These anthologies usually contain lots of great short stories. Some bad ones as well, I grant you that, but the majority is usually only published in mags and therefore not accesible to us. I've got 5 of Ashley's anthologies: Ashley, Mike (ed.): The Camelot Chronicles, (Robinson 1992) Ashley, Mike (ed.): The Merlin Chronicles, (Raven Books 1995) Ashley, Mike (ed.): The Chronicles of the Round Table, (Raven Books 1997) Ashley, Mike (ed.): The Chronicles of the Holy Grail, (Raven Books 1996) Ashley, Mike (ed.): , The Mammoth Book of Arthurian Legends, (Robinson 199  Most of these are out of stock, sadly. Horror-like, very nice: Saberhagen, Fred: Merlin's Bones, (Tor 1995, repr. 1996) Absolutely hilarios: Webber, Colin: Merlin and the Last Trump, (VGSF 1993, repr. 1994) Webber, Colin: Ribwash, (VGSF 1994) Of course, there are lots of Arthurian novels where Merlin 'trumps up', but this anice list to start ith, I hope. I'd be interested in knowing what you thought of the Merlin chronicles themselves. What stories did you really like?
Are you also Dutch btw? I've read the three Merlin books that were filmed by NBC, they were good, though pretty light. Still worth recommending though. The best stuff I've read on Myrrdin is Stewart's Merlin trilogy and Lawhead's Pendragon cycle. I'm told Cornwell's Warlords trilogy is also more than worth a try. Do you have any favs? Mike Ashley Contains stories by: Marion Zimmer Bradley, Maxey Brooke, Vera Chapman, Madalen Edgar, Esther M Friesner, Colin R Fry, Robert Holdstock, Phyllis Ann Karr, Tanith Lee, Charles de Lint, William Morris, Dinah Maria Mulock, H Warner Munn, Jennifer Roberson, Theodore Goodridge Roberts, Jessica Amanda Salmonson, Darrell Schweitzer, Emile Souvestre, David A Sutton, Peter Valentine Timlett, Peter Tremayne, E M Wilmot-Buxton, Jane Yolen I'll get back to you which I liked the best. Other favorites: Webber, Colin: Merlin and the Last Trump, (VGSF 1993, repr. 1994) and Webber, Colin: Ribwash, (VGSF 1994), because they're very good satires. My favorite is still Sutcliff, Rosemary: Sword at Sunset, (Tor 1963, repr. 1987), mainly because it's absolutely hostorical (written in 1953, though). No Merlin there. Very promising are also McCormack, Patrick: Albion, book 1, The Last Companion, (Robinson, 1997, repr. 2000) and McCormack, Patrick: Albion, book 2; The White Phantom, (Robinson 2000). Personally, I found Lawhead a bit too esoteric, but he sure had his highlights. Cornwall is also very good. And yes, I'm Dutch.
